Day two digest: BMW PGA Championship

Everything you need to know from day two at Wentworth Golf Club.

Wentworth

Rolex Series experts, stunning hole outs and more fun in the sun were the order of the day in round two of the BMW PGA Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Wentworth Golf Club.

Rolex specialists on the rise

Jon Rahm has three Rolex Series wins and a victory on Sunday would mean he has two more than any other player. Danny Willett completed a remarkable return to the top of the game with a Rolex Series victory at the 2018 season finale in Dubai. Justin Rose is the only player to successfully defend a Rolex Series title. Willett and Rahm share the lead at 11 under with Rose two shots back alongside Henrik Stenson and Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Moving Day should be a spectacular affair in Surrey.

Billy having a ball

Billy Horschel has been watching the BMW PGA Championship since he was a teenager and made no secret of his excitement at being able to tee it up this week. A man familiar with the history of Wentworth, he has now made some of his own, carding a 65 that is the lowest round ever by an American in this event over the West Course. "It's exceeded my expectations.," he said. "This course, I've been watching since I was 12, and it's a beautiful golf course on TV and you get here and it's even better in person. I fell in love with it when I walked on Sunday afternoon just to walk the course." This probably added to his joy as well.

Bezuidenhout blinder lights up Wentworth

It's been quite a year for Christiaan Bezuidenhout. His player blog revealing his childhood struggles with anxiety and a speech impediment after accidentally drinking rat poison won him a lot of fans and then he claimed a maiden European Tour win at the incredible setting of Valderrama. Will he have hit a better shot than this, though? Incredible stuff from the South African.

Goodbye to a great

This week José María Olazábal is playing his 25th BMW PGA Championship, 25 years after he lifted the trophy at Wentworth Golf Club. His 25th appearance will also be his last and he was given a fitting send off as fellow Spaniards Rahm, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, Jorge Campillo, Alvaro Quiros, Adrian Otaegui and Nacho Elvira gave him a guard of honour. It was an emotional goodbye to the two time Major winner and while he may not play this event anymore, he will always be a VIP at HQ.

Safety in the sun

It was another glorious day in the home counties but with sun comes risk and here at the European Tour, we do our best to make sure our members are sun aware. As well as giving out sunscreen and advice on appropriate clothing, there is a screening service to catch any problems early and over a dozen early cancers have been spotted over the years. Justin Thomas brought the issue to light last week when he revealed he had caught an early scare himself so the message to the players and fans this week is clear, wear sunscreen, get a hat on, and be safe in the glorious autumn sun.
