Happy memories as Fleetwood returns to France

Tommy Fleetwood is happy to be back at Le Golf National as he prepares to launch the defence of his HNA Open de France title.

A final-round 66 saw Fleetwood claim a one-shot victory over American Peter Uihlein last year which catapulted him to the top of the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex.

The 27 year old, who went on to clinch to Race to Dubai title after holding off the challenge of fellow Englishman Justin Rose, will be hoping to draw on those happy memories upon his return to Paris this week.

He said: "I think this event last year came at a point where I was pretty much in the form of my life.

"I'd had some great finishes and obviously I had a great year - I won at the start of the year.

"But winning the French Open, it doesn't matter what year it's in or where it's at, it's one of the biggest events we play on Tour, so to win one of those was massive, and just the way I did it.

"I was up there all week and then on Sunday I kind of led the whole way and felt very confident.

"It put me top of the Race to Dubai again so it was a pretty big week.

"It's nice to come back and have such good memories and you can look back at great rounds that you had and finished with a win."

Le Golf National will play host to The 2018 Ryder Cup in September and Fleetwood, who will be hoping to make Thomas Bjørn's European Team, believes the course could produce an exciting finish to the biennial showdown.

He added: "I struggle to think of a better finish that you could have.

"I mean you've got 24 of the best players in the world playing it, and I think it will probably show.

"It is what you practice for, to play some of the toughest holes in golf in the biggest sporting event in the world - something I'd like to do.

"Well, I'd probably like the matches to be over before it but I would still relish the challenge of playing them."

Fleetwood will get his opening round under way at 08.00 local time on Thursday alongside World Number Two Justin Thomas and home favourite Alex Levy.

Alex Levy

Frenchman Levy is looking forward to the week ahead.

He said: "It's nice to be home. The weather will be good this week, so the crowd will be there.

"And especially three months before the Ryder Cup, I think the people have more interest of golf, so it will be a really nice week. And I'm playing with one of the two best players in the world, so it will be a nice week for me.

"I think, the Majors aside, it's a tournament you want to win. So yeah, why not this week?"
