Van Rooyen birdied the 10th, 15th and first to reach three under through 11 holes and nine under for the week.

That was one clear of overnight leaders Laurie Canter and Robert Rock, with the English pair among the later starters.

Andy Sullivan made 20 footer on the 15th for a second eagle in three holes to reach seven under for the week and join a group of players tied for fourth.

France's Adrien Saddier, South African Dylan Frittelli, Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello, Dane Thorbjorn Olesen, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Italy's Matteo Manassero were all seven under out on the course.

Home favourite Manassero hit a hat-trick of birdies from the 13th to overcome an opening bogey on the tenth.
