It’s not just world-class golf on show at this year’s Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player with many eagled-eyed fans spotting colourful knits all over Gary Player Country Club this week.
Why is that?
Well, in a bid to get the local community further involved in the Rolex Series event, tournament organisers have introduced “yarn bombing” to help decorate the golf course.
Originating from Texas in the United States in the 2000s when knitting fanatics tried to find a creative way to use their leftover wool, yarn bombing has become a worldwide form of street art, which involves covering objects and structures in public places with knitted or crocheted material.
The team tasked with decorating the Sun City golf course are a passionate group of more than 20 men and women from the village of Mahobieskraal in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality, just over 20 miles away from this week’s venue.
Collectively, they have knitted a staggering 144,000 metres of wool to create beautiful “yarn bombs” that feature on trees around Gary Player Country Club – as well as all over objects in the Segaetsho Cultural Village.
