'He'll be happy, for sure' - John Daly II, son of Major Champion John Daly, holds his own in Scotland

This week sees John Daly II, the son of two-time Major Champion John Daly, make his professional debut on the DP World Tour.

The American, 23, joined the paid ranks in June and has since played twice on the Korn Ferry Tour.

But after receiving a tourament invite, Daly Jnr is testing himself on golf's global Tour in the Nexo Championship at Trump International Golf Links.

Playing alongside English duo Andy Sullivan and Daniel Brown, Daly II carded a level-par 72 on a day when the wind got up to sit five shots adrift of early pacesetter Marcus Kinhult.

Starting at the first, Daly II quickly got into the red with a two-putt birdie but gave that shot back at the next after taking a penalty.

An accurate tee shot resulted in a birdie at the par three sixth to enable him to hit the turn at one under.

While a double bogey at the par five tenth halted his momentum, he recovered his composure to produce seven pars in a row from there before an up-and-down for birdie at the 18th saw him finish his day on a high.

“I had some really nice up and downs," he said. "I’m very proud of my short game that’s for sure.

"I've definitely played in similar wind, but with the fescue and all, it was definitely a little daunting, just early on making sure to keep it in the fairway.

"But no, it was very tough. It was just really hard. A long day."

Daly II, who credited insights gained fro fellow former University of Arkansas students Jacob Skov Olesen and Julian Perico in practice, said his father would be proud of his performance.

"I'm sure he's probably already called me ten times," he added. "I can't wait to call him. He'll be happy, for sure. He'll say a lot about my chipping, and probably my speed."

During Thursday's first round, his swing came under the microscope as the World Feed cameras showed a side-by-side comparison with the 1991 US PGA Championship and 1995 Open Championship winner.

While Daly was known for his ultra-long backswing and strong grip, the younger Daly's move is more conventional but he still generates good power from a wider stance.
