In the latest player blog, seven-time European Tour winner Branden Grace talks about his love for St Andrews, competing in Majors and having fun with his fellow countrymen on tour.
I have to say St Andrews is a comfy town.Everything is within walking distance and there are some great restaurants. Then there’s the golf course almost in the middle of the town with all the history. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Guys enjoy coming out here and it’s nice if the weather can play its part. It’s a fun golf course to play and obviously the people make everything more worthwhile.
The main thing for me is trying to be consistent and there for as long as I can.I’ve had a full year now of being in the top 15 in the world and that’s been one of the goals. I’ve had a good couple of years on tour and I’m excited to get that chance to compete in the Majors.
It’s nice to know that you’ve been there and almost done it. I’ve had four top fives in Majors now and it’s nice to be a contender every time I tee it up. There’s a different vibe to them and hopefully I can finish it up one day.
When you get off the golf course you just want to go and relax. We’ve got a good group of guys out here from South Africa and when you get the time to hang out with them it’s pretty cool. When you haven’t seen the guys for a couple of weeks or months there are a lot of stories to be shared!
The South African group of guys have all become very good friends. When you’re out here you spend a lot of time away from home, so it’s nice to have a couple of friends here.
Brandon Stone and Haydn Porteous have been phenomenal. They’re a couple of great guys as well. The light is pretty bright for South African golf at the moment with the young guns coming up we’re fortunate to be in that position.
They’ve both had victories this year and it’s not easy to do that in your first year out on tour. I wish them all the luck in the future for flying the South African flag high. I enjoy playing with all the guys, giving them some banter and trying to get their cash a little bit!
I love playing golf, but obviously it’s work. When you go away for a weekend with some friends sometimes you still end up playing golf – it’s not what I want, but what they want! I love the outdoors. I like fishing, going out in the wild and doing something completely different to golf.
