    Son of professional, Bob, who used to play on the US Champions Tour. Lost to fellow American Bob May in the semi-final of The Amateur Championship at Ganton in 1991. Played in the Walker Cup match at Portmarnock the same year. Won twice on Nationwide Tour in America in 1993. Set a then record for rookie earnings on US PGA Tour in 1995, winning $881,436 to finish 11th on the Money List. Won final three starts in 1997 season, taking second place on the Money List. Became the first player in US PGA Tour history to win play-offs in consecutive weeks and first since 1991 to win first two tournaments back-to-back. Won US Money List in 1998 with $2,591,031. Won two of the first three tournaments in 1999 – the second being the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic when he closed with a remarkable round of 59. Missed six weeks of the 2000 season with a back injury but won on his return to action with a victory in the Buick Challenge. Partnered Tiger Woods to victory in the WGC - World Cup in Argentina in 2000, while the combination lost in a play-off in 2001. Won his first Major Championship in style at Royal Lytham & St Annes in July 2001 when a ten under par total of 274 gave him a three shot victory in The Open Championship. Made his Ryder Cup debut at Brookline in 1999 and qualified for the US Team once again in 2002, finishing in third spot in the rankings. Lauded for his sportsmanship in the wake of the United States defeat at The De Vere Belfry where he partied with the European players until the early hours of the morning, and was finally spotted leaving the European Team room with a European hat adorning his head! Has struggled with form and confidence in recent seasons and has been outside the top 200 on the US PGA Tour Money List in each of 2003, 2004 and 2005, finishing 260th in 2005, having made only one cut in 20 starts.
