Austrian Alpine Open presented by Kitzbühel Tirol: DP World Tour Fantasy Ones to Watch

The European Swing continues this week with another national open at the Austrian Alpine Open presented by Kitzbühel Tirol and here is all that players of the DP World Tour's official fantasy game need to know.

Golfclub Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee-Reith becomes the 465th venue to host a DP World Tour event for the second of three consecutive national opens on the schedule.

First held in 1990, the inaugural Austrian Open was won by Bernhard Langer and the 22 DP World Tour editions since have seen the likes of Paul McGinley, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Bernd Wiesberger and Joost Luiten lift the trophy.

Wiesberger is looking for a second win of the season and is joined in the field not only by Luiten and Cabrera Bello but also by fellow Austrian and Ryder Cup star Sepp Straka.

All abilities superstar Kipp Popert will also tee it up this week as he looks to bring some of his success from the disabled game to the DP World Tour.

Popert, who has celebral palsy, is number one in the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability and in recent years has often posted scores to rival those playing in DP World Tour events on the same courses and now he will look to do it in the same field.

Nicolai von Dellingshausen is the defending champion and will be looking for a return to form after missing four of his last five cuts.

Who are the most backed players?

Straka is our most backed player so far featuring in a huge 78% of teams, putting him more than 34 percentage points clear of Mikael Lindberg, who is the next most popular.

Rising star Jacob Skov Olesen is then at 37%, with Casey Jarvis - the highest-ranked player in the field on the Race to Dubai Rankings Delivered by DP World  - and Wiesberger rounding out the top five.

Who are our ones to watch?

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite: Sepp Straka

The World Number 18 is the higest-ranked player in the field so it is no surprise he is the Favourite this week with both the bookmakers and our players. Since becoming the first Austrian to win on the PGA TOUR in  2022 he has since added three more wins in the United States, including two last season, reaching a career-high seventh in the Official World Golf Ranking in the process. His two Ryder Cup appearances have seen two European wins and if he is inspired by playing on home soil for the first time since 2018, he may well take some beating.

Form Horse: Mikael Lindberg

It is not often a Form Horse comes into a week off the back of two results outside the top ten but we think we can cut Mikael Lindberg a bit of slack. After making his first seven cuts of the season, he narrowly missed the weekend at the treacherous DLF Golf and Country Club before bouncing back with a tie for third in China and a maiden DP World Tour title at the Turkish Airlines Open. That was enough to make him our Wild Card for the US PGA Championship where he made the cut on his Major debut. He then withdrew from U.S. Open Qualifying to keep his focus solely on racking up Race to Dubai points and duly finished in the top 20 in Belgium. He will surely contend again.

Wild Card: Maximilian Steinlechner

While nobody this week will have the advantage of having played tournament golf at the venue (the HotelPlanner Tour has been here once before 23 years ago)  there is no doubt comfort and familiarity will come into play. And that could play right into the hands of Maxiimilian Steinlechner. Only five Austrians have won across the DP World and HotelPlanner Tours and four of them won on home soil, just like Steinlechner did last season on the HotelPlanner Tour. And while he may not have had the smoothest start to life on the DP World Tour so far, he had three seconds and two other top tens on the HotelPlanner Tour last season - that is a serious player. Could this be the week he steps up?

Looking back - Soudal Open

He may have arrived in Belgium with six DP World Tour wins to his name but our players did not much fancy Richard Sterne last week, so the 326 players - 1.19% - will have been delighted to get a jump on their rivals and take home 217 points.

Our Favourite last week Thomas Detry finished in a tie for 53rd, while Form Horse JC Ritchie and Wild Card Sam Bairstow missed the cut.
