It has today been announced that Befriend a Child and the Paul Lawrie Foundation will be the benefitting charities of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play, taking place at Murcar Links Golf Club this summer.

Both charities will benefit from a number of fundraising activities taking place during the tournament week, with Lawrie himself leading the way by donating £100 per birdie and £500 per eagle he makes during the event.  He will also be leaning on his fellow golfers to do the same in a bid to raise as much money for both charities as possible.  All monies raised will be split equally between both benefitting parties.

Saltire Energy, tournament title sponsor, is a long-time supporter of Befriend a Child. The company donated £1million to the charity in 2013 and entered into a five-year commitment to reduce the waiting list of young people waiting for the much-needed support and friendship provided by Befriend a Child. As a result of his support, Mike Loggie, CEO of Saltire Energy, was made an honorary patron of Befriend a Child in 2013.

The Paul Lawrie Foundation is also solely focused on giving opportunities to youngsters by encouraging juniors of all ages and levels to take up the game of golf.  Lawrie also announced that the Foundation has agreed to sponsor the entry fee of all under-18s who come to watch the Paul Lawrie Match Play at Murcar, which will replace the previous ‘Kid for a Quid’ promotion.  All under-18s will have free entry to the event and will receive a Paul Lawrie Foundation cap.

Paul Lawrie said: “I’m delighted to be announcing both Befriend a Child and my Foundation as official charities for the Match Play, and I am sure that we can find some great ways to raise money.  Hopefully I can get some of the guys playing the tournament to also donate per birdie and eagle they make.”

Lana Bambridge, Development and Resources Manager at Befriend a Child, said: “Befriend a Child is delighted to be one of the chosen charities at the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play. We are extremely grateful, not only for the financial support, but also for the opportunity to raise awareness about our work with disadvantaged children in the local community. ”

The inaugural Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play will take place at Murcar Links Golf Club, Aberdeen, from 30 July until 2 August 2015. The event will run for a minimum of three years on The Race to Dubai.
