BMW PGA Championship: Day three digest

Celli and Elvira shared the lead, Reitan had a day to remember, McIlroy thrilled with a big finish and Meronk chased the ace in round three of the BMW PGA Championship.

Big day ahead for leading duo

Filippo Celli and Manuel Elvira will share the lead heading into the final round but the pair have a high-class leaderboard breathing down their necks. On a day when a host of players shared the lead, the playing partners both birdied the last to get to 13 under and sit one ahead of Major champion JJ Spaun, Spaniard Alejandro del Rey and American Johannes Veerman. McIlroy finished birdie-eagle to get to 11 under alongside fellow Masters champion Adam Scott, American Davis Bryant, Chilean Joaquin Niemann and Norway's Kristoffer Reitan. Italian Celli and Spaniard Elvira carded rounds of 69 and 68 respectively and will go out together again on Sunday as they both look for a first DP World Tour win at the third Rolex Series event of the season.

McIlroy bolts into contention

The Masters champion was treading water at level par for the day after 16 holes but a birdie on the 17th kicked him into gear and his second into the last was pure McIlroy, with a birdie-eagle finish catapulting him within two of the lead. "I'd love to win this tournament again," he said. "It's been a long time, 12 years. I have so many great memories of Wentworth in general. I came here for the first time as a ten-year-old to watch the World Match Play all the way back in the day. It was always half-term. I always came with my mum and dad and watched this one. Fast forward, I've won this event. I've played a lot here and we now have a house on the estate as well. This place has a lot of history for me. Hopefully I have a good chance and give myself a real chance at it again."

When Adrian Meronk holed a five iron from 206 yards at the fifth, he did not only make the first hole-in-one of the week - he made his first hole-in-one on the DP World Tour. And he was clearly very pleased with his work, even if he didn't win a prize.

Future ambitions fuelling current form

Kristoffer Reitan was taking inspiration from being part of a Ryder Cup scouting trip this week as a back-nine birdie blitz left him hailing one of his career-best rounds. The Norwegian was one of four would-be Team Europe rookies who attended a visit to Adare Manor on Monday after a memorable campaign that has seen him add PGA Tour success to his two DP World Tour titles from 2025. He has yet to claim a Rolex Series title but a 64 on Saturday put him right in the mix at 11 under and he revealed he was using Ryder Cup ambitions to help him find the next level week in, week out. "It was cool," he said. "It was a very, very good experience for me. It's just a little bit of a tease, you know, and it's meant to inspire you and I'm trying to let it inspire me. I know that I'm not certain of a place on that team. I have to work really, really hard on the quality in every single piece of my game. But being there was huge."

Speaking of Reitan..........

His 64 made a bit of history as he carded 11 birdies - a record for this event. He also made 165 feet of putts. What a morning's work.
