Bernd Wiesberger had a round to remember on the second day of the 2017 Maybank Championship when he became the first player on the European Tour to record nine successive birdies at Saujana Golf and Country Club.

With preferred lies in place the record was not counted officially, but it didn’t detract from the Austrian’s historic display, whose nine-under 63 moved him in to the 36-hole lead in emphatic fashion.

Wiesberger's remarkable charge through the field began at the seventh hole courtesy of some stunning approach play, and he quickly placed himself firmly in contention with a long-range putt at the 11th for his fifth birdie in a row.

After then finding to the side of the green on the par five 13th in two for another gain, Wiesberger - who had started the day six strokes back - took the lead a hole later thanks to an excellent approach to the 14th.

The run looked like it may end on the 15th when Wiesberger left himself 25 feet from the fringe, but he rolled that one in for a staggering ninth birdie in a row.

"I hit really good shots and I just felt calm out there. It felt kind of natural," he said at the time.

"I hit pretty good shots and really only holed two long ones which were the last birdie of the nine on 15 and about a 20-footer on 11. Apart from that I just hit them pretty close and felt like I had a good idea of what the ball was going to do on the green today again which was nice."

Wiesberger went on to record further rounds of 73 and 66, finishing in third place on 17-under-par, two strokes behind winner Fabrizio Zanotti.

Australian James Nitties became the first player to officially record nine birdies in a row on the European Tour during the ISPS Handa Vic Open in February 2019.
