The 2016 Masters Champion aggravated a tear in his left shoulder during the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club earlier this month, a week after pulling out of the Horizon Irish Open following an opening 76 due to the long-standing issue.

It is unclear for how long Willett will be sidelined but he is already looking ahead with optimism as he targets a full recovery following the operation on Wednesday.

"After struggling in recent weeks with shoulder pain, scans revealed I need surgery to repair a couple of tears," Willett wrote in a social media post.

"Hard work begins now and I’ll do everything possible to get back stronger than ever. Thanks to all my fans, sponsors and team for your amazing support."

Willett looked set to challenge for the the lead on day one at the BMW PGA Championship when he covered his first 12 holes in six under par, before dropping five shots in his final six holes over the West Course.

He went on to add rounds of 71, 70 and 76 to finish in a tie for 64th.

Willett won the most recent of his eight DP World Tour titles at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October 2021.
