Day two digest: 2020 U.S. Open Championship

Everything you need to know from day two of the season's second Major Championship.

Reed fought to the front, Winged Foot lived up to its reputation, Rafa rose to the occasion and putters were an optional extra in round two of the 2020 U.S. Open Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday in New York.

Reed shows his mettle

You don't win a Major Championship, two WGCs and earn yourself a fearsome Ryder Cup reputation without having some battling qualities and Patrick Reed showed them all on day two. Bryson DeChambeau had thrown down the gauntlet with a closing eagle in a wonderful 68 and it looked like that clubhouse target may end up being the 36 hole lead. But Reed got up and down from the sand on his final hole for a 70 and a one shot lead. "I love the grind," he said. "I love getting in there. I love when it's hard, when you have to be creative on all different golf shots." There'll have to be plenty more of that over the weekend.

Rafa's roller coaster

There is no quit in Rafa Cabrera Bello. After long putts handed him two early birdies, the Spaniard surrendered five bogeys to slip the wrong side of par. But three birdies in his last four holes catapulted the Ryder Cup star right into contention heading into the weekend. "I tend to be a grinder... I never give up. I keep fighting," he said. There is no doubting that.

Have another go

Much of the talk this week is about the rough and the greens but the bunkers can provide a good test, too. Louis Oosthuizen left his third shot at the ninth in the bunker but not to worry, he did this with his fourth.

Not to be outdone, Lucas Herbert did this at the third.

No putters required.

Slam. Dunk.

It hasn't been the best week for Matthew Fitzpatrick but at least he's guaranteed to make every 2020 U.S. Open highlight reel forever. Wow.
