Day two digest: The 2021 Open Championship

Everything you need to know from day two in England.

Royal St George's Golf Club

Louis extended his legend, Jigger had everyone dancing, Marcel's fairytale continued, Collin told us what he really thought of the Fake Pundit and we paid tribute to a great on day two of The 2021 Open Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Royal St George's Golf Club.

Louis makes more history

Louis Oosthuizen is already an Open great due to the Claret Jug in his trophy cabinet but on day two he further cemented his place in the history of the oldest Major Championship. The South African added a 65 to his opening 64 for a 129 total - the lowest after 36 holes ever at The Open. “I only heard that when I walked in,” Oosthuizen said after learning he had outdone Sir Nick Faldo and Brandt Snedeker. “I was not aware of what it was but to have any record at The Open is always very special." He will take a two shot lead into the weekend at 11 under.

Joy for Jigger

A big man produced a big moment as Jonathan Thomson made a hole-in-one. The 25-year-old known as Jigger has one of the most remarkable stories in the game and has added another chapter after needing just a single blow on the 16th. The Englishman was diagnosed with leukaemia aged seven but continued to play golf throughout a five-year battle with the disease before going into remission as a 12 year old. Eight years later he was a professional and in 2017 he came through all three stages of the Qualifying School to earn his European Tour card and - at six feet nine and a half inches - become the tallest player in Tour history. "You dream about playing in The Open as a kid and then you come here, have a hole-in-one and make the cut, and it's just like, wow," he said.

Stunning Siem maintains momentum

Marcel Siem is so determined to regain his card on the European Tour that he almost turned down his place in the field this week. A four time winner on the European Tour, he is now playing on the European Challenge Tour and his victory at last week's Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge earned him a first Open appearance in six years. He has grabbed his opportunity with both hands, carding two rounds of 67 in Kent, but his win also moved him up to third in the Road to Mallorca Rankings and he admitted he considered teeing it up at the Euram Bank Open instead of the 2021 Race to Dubai's final Major Championship. “I saw I was third on the Rankings but I was still thinking ‘Am I ready for the big stage?',” he said. “I want to get my card back first and foremost. I heard that 10 per cent of the Open prize money goes towards the Challenge Tour Rankings so then it was a no-brainer to come here." A win will secure your card, Marcel............

Collin opens up on the Fake Pundit

In Scotland last week, Collin Morikawa was one of the European Tour stars caught out by the Fake Pundit.

And after carding a 64 that left him two shots behind Oosthuizen, he told the world's press what he had thought of the experience.

Paying tribute to the great Peter Alliss

In December last year, the golfing world lost Peter Alliss, a man with five Open top tens and eight Ryder Cup appearances, including seven in a row from 1957. But he may be best remembered for his broadcasting career where he became known as the Voice of Golf. On the first on Friday, at the first Open since his passing, we paid tribute to one of the most popular figures in the history of our game.
