Having opened his round at Kingsbarns Golf Links' fourth hole due to Friday morning's shotgun start, the Englishman bounced back from a bogey on the seventh with an ace at the par-three eighth.

With the weather worsening later in his round, Pepperell was pleased he could reward his fans for coming out to watch him by achieving the rare feat.

He said: "It was just before all of this truly horrendous (weather) came in.

"It was timely. I've not been able to get the ball in from two feet today, it seems, and then I had a hole-in-one!

"It was actually a good shot and it gave a few of my fans out here something to cheer about.

"It was a 6-iron, just trying to hold it up against a little bit of a right-to-left wind and pitched online and just rolled down there, fed in."

With the players all finishing their second rounds at a similar time, Pepperell was planning a speedy getaway to avoid having to buy everyone at Kingsbarns a drink.

As the rain poured down during his on-course interview, Pepperell said: "I'll be making a sharp exit. I might even walk in!"
