The HSBC Champions has been part of The European Tour schedule since 2006, before taking on the title of World Golf Championship in 2009, further enhancing its reputation as one of both the Tour’s, and World golf’s, biggest events. It has had its fair share of marquee winners in its previous seven stagings, with the likes of David Howell, YE Yang, Sergio Garcia, Francesco Molinari and Phil Mickelson – the only one to have won the title twice – having tasted glory at Sheshan International GC. In 2011 Germany’s Martin Kaymer became the latest to join that impressive roll of honour, shooting a stunning Sunday 63 thanks to nine birdies in the final 12 holes, to claim his first WGC title by three strokes from Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson.
