Leishman eager for long-awaited home win

Marc Leishman has set his sights on a big win on home soil when he tees it up alongside Cameron Smith at this week's 2018 ISPS HANDA Melbourne World Cup of Golf.

The World Number 21 won the first 2016 staging of the Nedbank Golf Challenge and also has four wins on the US PGA Tour, including just last month at the CIMB Classic.

He enjoyed a prolific amateur career in his homeland and won five times on the Von Nida Tour between 2006 and 2008 but has yet to taste victory on the top-tier PGA Tour of Australasia, something he aims to put right at The Metropolitan Golf Club.

"As an Australian golfer I would say there's a little hole in there," he said. "It's something that I would like to change.

"I've won all around the world now and won some smaller events here in Australia. Apart from a Major, that's the next thing on the list, something that I would love to knock off this week or next week.

"I think early in my career I probably relaxed a little bit too much when I was back in Australia, which is pretty easy to do. Not that I wasn't determined then but I'm really determined to play really well here this week and try and win the World Cup with Cam. That would be huge."

Smith already has a big home win under his belt after claiming the Australian PGA Championship last season, a title he will defend next week at RACV Royal Pines Resort.

Leishman admitted it was a tough phone call telling 2016 World Cup partner Adam Scott that he would be selecting Smith to play alongside this year, but the 35 year old is confident the pair can make a mark.

"Last World Cup in 2016 we had a lot of fun," he said. "It wasn't the result we were after but it's nice to be back here in Melbourne and representing our country. Hopefully, we can play well and do everyone proud.

"We'll appear laid back, I think, out there. Hopefully things go our way and we play well and do have a lot of fun. I think we will either way but, obviously, we'll have more fun if we play well.

"Don't be mistaken if we look like we're having too much fun, we're very determined and competitive people and I think that we'll do well."

As well as that win on the Gold Coast, Smith finished in a tie for fifth at the Masters Tournament last season as his career goes from strength to strength, and he is delighted to be representing his country at the highest level.

"It's my first World Cup," he said. "Playing with Marc, awesome guy. I think we'll have plenty of fun out there.

"Great location, great golf course. We've been out and played all 18 now so the course is in amazing condition and I think it should be a good week for everyone.

"Leish and I have become pretty good mates over the past probably year and a bit, played practice rounds and just going out for dinner and hung in locker rooms and stuff like that, so we got to know each other really well.

"I'm sure there'll be plenty of banter out there just between us. If we take it pretty lightly, I think, and put some crap on each other, it will turn it into a nice week."
