Mickelson lands 40th US PGA victory

Phil Mickelson showed Tiger Woods a clean pair of heels on his way to the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Playing alongside Woods, Mickelson delivered the archetypal Sunday charge with an eight under par round of 64 to become only the ninth player to win 40 career US PGA Tour titles.

Mickelson finished 11 shots ahead of Woods who had a round of 75 for a tie for 15th place.

South Korean Charlie Wi four-putted for bogey on the opening hole and could not recover as he saw his overnight three shot lead disappear under Mickelson's charge which took him to 17 under by the close.

Wi eventually finished two shots back from Mickelson, with Ricky Barnes two back in third on 13 under and Aaron Baddeley on 12 under.

Kevin Na and Dustin Johnson tied for fifth on 11 under, with Ireland's Padraig Harrington a shot further back on ten under along with Ken Duke.

Greg Owen was in a tie for ninth on nine under, with fellow Englishmen Brian Davis tied 29th on five under, Ian Poulter on two under and Gary Christian one under.

Mickelson admitted he was enjoying having the upper hand over Woods, something he had made the most of over the past five years after his rival's earlier dominance.

"I feel he brings the best out of me but only the last five years. Before that I got spanked pretty good," he said.

Mickelson also enjoyed taking one putt from holes 12 to 15 to cement his victory.

"My putter just feels really good. As each day passes I seem to make more and more putts.

"I am really excited about this. Because I have confidence in my ability I was trying to make and believed I was going to make those 30 footers."

While Mickelson was charging to his 40th career US PGA Tour victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, another battle was unfolding at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Padraig Harrington and J.P. McManus entered Sunday’s final round with a three-shot lead and got up and down at the last to hold on for a share of the Pro-am title with the team of Brian Harman and Gregg Ontiveros.

At 35 under, the two teams ended the week three-shots clear of the Ricky Barnes-Bill Belichick team. Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, teed it up at Pebble beach less than a week removed from his team’s loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

“I knew I needed birdie because I screwed up big time,” said McManus. “I was in good shape for my drive. And, listen, I never doubted Padraig, that he would get it up-and-down.”

Harrington added: “We have been playing together, this is probably close to 20 of these at this stage, we have played Dunhills in Europe and the AT&T now for a seventh year, and this is the best I've seen him play.

“He really hit the golf ball great and holed some great pressure putts. The last two days we were leading and it's always tough when you are leading - you're a little bit more cautious and you're a little bit safer.

Even though we had a big lead, you knew it was going to come right down to the stretch, and his birdie on the 16thwas exactly what we needed at the time. We got one on the 17thand obviously 18 was a little bit of a struggle after a while, but it worked out.”
