Oh brother - Golfing siblings take centre stage

Watch out Molinaris - there are some new sets of golfing brothers in town.

Nacho Elvira

On the same stage where Francesco and Edoardo made such an impression at the Ryder Cup 11 years ago, Nacho Elvira carded a 67 on day two of the 2021 Cazoo Open supported by Gareth Bale to get to 11 under and lead after 36 holes.

Meanwhile, over at the Italian Challenge on the European Challenge Tour, younger brother Manuel was carding a 64 to also get to 11 under and lead the way at Margara Golf Club.

Frenchman Frederic Lacroix eventually moved past Manuel to hold the halfway lead in Italy but for a large part of Friday, there was a pair of brothers leading events on the European and Challenge Tours on exactly the same score.

"It’s unbelievable," said Nacho. "I just found out a few minutes ago.

"He’s my brother, he’s ten years younger, he turned pro a couple of years ago.

"He’s been playing great. I saw this morning he started with four birdies in a row and I didn’t want to look any more.

"It’s awesome that we are both 11 under and leading, it’s interesting - that must have never happened before."

While the Molinaris and Elviras are all in the paid ranks, Matt Fitzpatrick's brother Alex is still an amateur but he was teeing it up with Nacho at The Celtic Manor Resort.

Edoardo and Francesco Molinari

The 22-year-old was playing just his second European Tour event but is enjoying a stellar amateur career, sitting fourth in the World Rankings with two Walker Cup appearances and a nomination for the Fred Haskins Award - the prize given to the top collegiate golfer in the United States - under his belt.

"I felt like I've worked pretty hard, this year especially, and was lucky to see the results and to be selected as one of the best players," he said. "It was a pretty cool achievement."

When asked about his Rolex Series champion brother, Alex joked: "He's alright. Could be worse, could be better.

"He's pretty good so I look up to him a lot and I always ask for his help when I need it and he's there for me as a brother as well so it's great. The best of both worlds.

"I tell him I hit it further than him, that's about all I've got really. Other than that I've not got much on him so that's pretty much all I tell him.

"I've been waiting for a car for about four years now and there's still not one sat on the drive so I'll be patiently waiting."

The Molinaris, Elviras and Fitzpatricks may be wildly talented siblings but they are not massively talented twins - that honour belongs to Junior Ryder Cup stars the Højgaards.

Nicolai and Rasmus teamed up with John Axelsen to win the Eisenhower Trophy for Denmark in 2018 and since then both have turned professional, with Rasmus winning two European Tour titles.

Nicolai is in action in Wales this week and sits at one under heading into the weekend.

With nine European Tour wins including a Major, a World Golf Championships title and a Rolex Series trophy - not to mention a Race to Dubai win - between them the Molinaris are still European golf's most successful siblings.

But they might just be looking over their shoulders.
