An array of past and present Scottish rugby stars will tee it up in next month’s Nexo Championship Celebrity Pro-Am, with Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend joined by Finn Russell, Zander and Matt Fagerson, George Horne, Gavin Hastings, Rory Lawson, Duncan Weir and Ryan Wilson.
The talented group will star in the inaugural Celebrity Pro-Am on Wednesday 19 August, before the action gets under way in the Nexo Championship at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen.
Russell, one of Scotland’s modern-day greats, has been capped 95 times for his country, having made his international debut in 2014. The star fly-half has since scored over 500 points for Scotland, placing him fourth in the country’s all-time list.
The 33-year-old will be joined by the Fagerson brothers on the links. The pair have earned 150 caps between them – tighthead prop Zander made his debut in 2016 before being joined by younger brother Matt two years later, where they became the 48th set of siblings to represent Scotland at international level. The duo have been consistent contributors in the years since, including selection for the 2023 World Cup squad.
The Fagersons will link up with team-mate Horne. The scrum-half, who made his debut in 2018, is just three caps short of a half century, and most recently played a pivotal role in Scotland’s Nations Championship match against Fiji – he served as one of two vice-captains in the win at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium.
Respected coach Townsend, who has been at the helm of the national team since 2017, will join his players in also teeing it up for an action-packed day in Aberdeen. The former player won 82 caps for his country and two for the British Lions, retiring from international rugby in 2003 to later move into coaching.
Townsend will reunite with a past team-mate in Hastings at Trump International Golf Links. The celebrated player, known for his leadership and exceptional full-back skills, earned 61 international caps for Scotland, and captained the team 20 times.
Wilson, who achieved 50 caps, alongside Lawson and Weir, who represented Scotland on 31 and 30 occasions respectively, round out the rugby talent locked in for the unmissable event.
The newly introduced Celebrity Pro-Am is set to add to the atmosphere in Aberdeen, with a host of Scottish sporting stars, including football stars Gordon Strachan, Scott Brown, Charlie Mulgrew, Allan McGregor, James McArthur, Steven Fletcher and John Hewitt, and tennis royalty in renowned coach Judy Murray and seven-time major doubles champion Jamie Murray, also confirmed to feature.
Tickets are now on sale, with fans encouraged to book their spot early.
