Shane Lowry bids to tick off another career goal in Scotland

Shane Lowry says he is eager to capitalise on his impressive form and fulfil another career goal by winning the 2022 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Irishman held off fellow Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm to end his three-year wait for a victory as he claimed his second Rolex Series title at the BMW PGA Championship earlier this month.

Lowry, who had not won since the 2019 Open at Royal Portrush, has now set his sights on using his links expertise to ensure his next success is sooner rather than later.

This week’s event is held across St Andrews’ Old Course, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns and Lowry is eager to put himself in contention for victory at the Home of Golf on Sunday.

“It's definitely one of the places you'd love to win,” he said.

“I'd love to win at St Andrews and to win this tournament would be very special, and it would definitely be another box ticked in my career.

“I'm going along nicely, and I've won a few nice tournaments. I'd like to become a bit more consistent, winning a bit more every two or three years.

“You know, I just kind of keep going out and keep doing my thing and doing as best I can. Hopefully give myself a chance this week. I'm playing well and playing some of the best golf I've played in my career.

“If I can go out there and battle the elements this week when it comes, I'll do all right.”

Lowry boasts an excellent record in the tournament, with six top-20 finishes since his debut in 2009.

He knows a strong start to his challenge at Carnoustie on Thursday is imperative with challenging conditions forecasted later in the week.

“If you look at the forecast, it's good tomorrow, which means scoring will be quite good here and at Kingsbarns.

“Carnoustie even on a nice day is tough, so it will be important to shoot a good score tomorrow.

“Kingsbarns on Friday will be pretty difficult. Yeah, just go and play. It's the same for everyone. Just go out and deal with it and try to enjoy as best you can and shoot the best score you can.”
