The 150th Open Championship - Day two digest

Everything you need to know from day two at St Andrews.

Tiger Woods

Cam cruised ahead, Tiger took centre stage, Viktor made a spectacular eagle and Tyrrell continued his love affair with the Home of Golf on day two of The 150th Open Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at St Andrews.

Emotional Woods drinks in applause at 18th

Tiger Woods received a memorable ovation as he made an emotional walk up the 18th at St Andrews, admitting afterwards that he wasn't sure whether this was his last Open Championship at the Old Course. Knowing he would not be playing over the weekend after his second-round 75, the 15-time Major Champion removed his cap to acknowledge the cheers and waved to his adoring fans. He said: "It's very emotional for me. I've been coming here since 1995. I think the next one comes around in what, 2030, and I don't know if I will be physically able to play by then. So to me it felt like this might have been my last Open here at St Andrews. And the fans, the ovation and the warmth, it was an unbelievable feeling."

Smith stars with spotless 64

Cameron Smith began the day in a share of third place but by the time he teed off on Friday afternoon he had been overtaken by a host of morning starters. He quickly did something about that when he got under way, reeling off a hat-trick of opening birdies to jump to eight under par. He added three more at the seventh, eighth and tenth to stand alone at the top of the leaderboard before an eagle on the 14th took him to 13 under and gave him a two-shot 36-hole lead.

Carnasty is Carnice for Hovland

After missing the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open last week, Viktor Hovland played 36 holes over the weekend but that was not enough. On Monday, he then headed to the fearsome Carnoustie for a twilight round and it must have paid off as he is ten under and three off the lead after a second-round 66 - the highlight of which was this remarkable eagle on the 15th.

Hatton impresses at St Andrews again

Tyrrell Hatton is used to getting over the line at the Old Course, having secured his first two DP World Tour titles here at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2016 and 2017. He played his way into contention at St Andrews once again on day two, posting a bogey-free 66 to jump to eight under. He feels success on the greens will be important over the final 36 holes. He said: "I think that's the big thing for me, if I can hole putts this weekend. If my pace is a little bit better than it was today on the mid-range putts, then sure, we can do well."

Roars for Rory

The huge crowds following Rory McIlroy were treated to some exceptional golf at the start of his back nine and they showed their appreciation with loud roars. After driving the tenth green, he tapped in for a birdie there before holing from 16 feet at the 11th to make it two in a row. He got his hat-trick with another birdie on the 12th after driving the green again. He bogeyed the 15th but hit back on the Road Hole and will head into the weekend just three back.

Amateur Barclay cashes in to make the cut

Sheffield amateur Barclay Brown is a member of the same club as U.S. Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick and the pair will head into the weekend at The 150th Open Championship on the same score after he added a second-round 70 to Thursday's 68 to get to six under par. The 21-year-old leads the race for the Silver Medal by three shots ahead of Italian Filippo Celli.
