The Debrief: Australian PGA Championship

Home favourite Adam Scott secured his first European Tour title in over three years to claim the Australian PGA Championship.

Scott sealed his 11th European Tour victory after holding off New Zealand's Michael Hendry by two shots at RACV Royal Pines Resort.

Here are the highlights from a memorable week on the Gold Coast.

Flying Scott prevails in titanic tussle

The 2013 champion produced a closing 69 to win but he was pushed all the way by Hendry when the New Zealander moved ahead following a burst around the turn. However, Scott swung the momentum back in his favour with a wonderful birdie-eagle from the 14th to move two clear, only for Hendry to card a birdie at the 16th to halve the deficit. A bogey at the next by Hendry opened up a two-shot advanatage for the Australian before Scott missed the 17th green, but the 2013 Masters Tournament winner saved par thanks to a brilliant recovery shot before both players bogeyed the last.

Dig in the ribs no pain for Hendry

Hendry looked set to be in for a difficult weekend when he required treatment for an injury early in his third round. However, he kept his composure for a 70 on Moving Day to remain two behind Scott heading into Sunday. A brilliant burst of scoring around the turn saw Hendry take the outright lead on a topsy turvy final afternoon before Scott hit back to claim the title after as the New Zealander closed his fourth round with back to back bogeys for solo second. He said: "The warm‑up was terrible. I honestly thought I wasn't going to get through the round. So quite honestly, my goal today was just to get through 18 holes and finish the event regardless of what the score was. Lo and behold, I hit it really well. It was painful all day and I just kept trying to basically man up and hit the shot."

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

You usually expect a strong showing at a home tournament but the blue and stars dominated the leaderboard at RACV Royal Pines Resort, with no less than 17 Australians in the top 27. Scott led the way with Cameron Davis, Nick Flanagan, Min Woo Lee and Wade Ormsby all finishing tied for third.

Flanagan finds form

Flanagan scraped through on the cut mark on Friday, but was on fire by Saturday morning. He made nine birdies and no bogeys to tie the men's course record at RACV Royal Pines Resort with a spotless 63 - a whopping ten shots better than Friday's effort. That left Flanagan just two shots off the third round lead and was in with a shout of claiming the trophy on Sunday before finishing three adrift of Scott.

Partners in crime

On Tour, you often see more of your caddie than your partner but Bryce Easton has found an easy way to get around that. The South African had wife Lauren on the bag and that is not just for this week, Mrs Easton has been his regular caddie for the last 18 months. Easton was not the only player in the field with his partner alongside him, as American Stewart Cink has wife Lisa on the bag with both finishing the weekend high up the leaderboard. Easton was tenth on seven under while Cink was three shots further back in a tie for 22nd.

Gale force

We have become used to seeing the big hitters going for the green at some par fours but Daniel Gale didn't just have the putting surface in his sights - he was aiming for the cup. And he came agonisingly close to finding it and getting an albatross on Saturday, but had to settle for a tap-in eagle two from a matter of inches.
