Thorbjørn Olesen hails his hot putter after strong second round

Thorbjørn Olesen insisted he had his putting prowess to thank for his solid start to the 2023 Soudal Open after following up his opening 68 with a second-round 67.

The Dane started from the tenth tee on Friday morning, and made five birdies and a double bogey on his way out before adding two more birdies and a single bogey after the turn to head into the weekend on seven under par.

Olesen confidently knocked in a series of putts from inside 15 feet on day two, and although he feels he has not been at his best at Rinkven International Golf Club, the 33-year-old was pleased with his putting.

He said: "To be honest, I haven’t played well these first two days but it’s been the best I’ve putted in a year or so.

"It felt really good on the greens, especially today. I holed almost everything inside 12 or 15 feet, that was the good part.

"I feel like I’ve been struggling with the game the last few weeks, the same this week. But I managed to get it around, hit some good wedge shots and gave myself some chances."

Olesen spent the first two rounds in the company of countryman Thomas Bjørn, and enjoyed playing alongside his childhood idol and now close friend.

"I always enjoy playing with Thomas," he added.

"He was my idol growing up and we’ve become very good friends.

"I’ve played a lot with him over the years, it’s always nice to get out there and play with him."
