Ranked 375th in the Official World Golf Rankings at the start of the 2014 season, the rise of Tyrrell Hatton to World Number 24, where he currently sits in the OWGR, has been nothing short of extraordinary.
After coming close to a maiden European Tour win on numerous occasions, Hatton won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in style at St. Andrews in October for what many believe was the first of many titles for the High Wycombe native. He came very close to adding to that victory at the showpiece season-ending DP World Tour Championship, finishing just one shot behind winner Matt Fitzpatrick.
Although disappointed to lose out by such a narrow margin, Hatton reflected positively on another good week in his career. “It was a great week for me in Dubai, and for me it’s been the best year of my life.”
The Englishman has not finished outside of the top 40 in the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex in his three full seasons on the European Tour, with his fourth place finish in the season-long rankings in 2016 surpassing even Hatton’s expectations. His stroke average fell by almost a whole shot to a very impressive 69.93 last season, with Hatton also driving the ball further than he ever has before, finding more greens and averaging less putts. Everything in his game appears to be trending in the right direction, and rather than resting on his laurels, Hatton will be pressing on in 2017 as he looks to make his mark on the Major Championships and World Golf Championships.
His links prowess, which has seen Hatton post four top five finishes in the Irish and Scottish Opens over the last three years, marks him out as a real contender for future Open Championships. Some have questioned his attitude and temperament in years gone by, but all of those doubts have been firmly quashed. Now it is time for Hatton to show the golfing world just how good he can be.
