Hainan Classic presented by MAEXTRO | The debrief

Jordan Gumberg claimed his second DP World Tour title in wire-to-wire fashion after a thrilling final-day battle at Mission Hills.

Here is everything you need to know from the opening event of the Asian Swing in China.

More Asian joy for Gumberg

Gumberg won in Hainan after holding off playing partner Jorge Campillo on a captivating final day.

The American, who only kept his DP World Tour card for this season thanks to a hole-out eagle on the 72nd hole of last October's Genesis Championship in South Korea, can add China to his list of favourite Asian destinations after a one-stroke victory at Mission Hills.

A final round of 70 saw him finish 19 under par, with Campillo's birdie putt at the last staying up as he finished 18 under.

Gumberg said in his press conference after the trophy presentation: “It feels unbelievable, this is a dream-come-true week.

"After the finish of last year, to be standing on the podium again and holding a trophy is unreal, it’s incredible."

It was Gumberg's second DP World Tour win, just over two years on from his SDC Championship success in South Africa in March 2024.

He said: “Two years ago I won my first event, I wasn’t actually a member of the Tour at that point, I was playing on sponsor invites, it was kind of a whirlwind of a change of schedule and being able to be a DP World Tour player.

“The first year was kind of me learning the ropes and learning the golf courses, and it took a while. There’s a big learning curve – I mean, these guys are good! Every player in this field is a hell of a player and can win."

Wang and Wang take team honours

Zi Wang and his amateur partner Quianzhou Wang were the runaway winners of the team competition held over the first two days.

The all-Chinese pair produced an astonishing score of 32 under par after rounds of 57 and 55, under the better-ball format and with Quianzhou's handicap factored in.

They started Friday's second round, on the Blackstone Course at Mission Hills, on the back nine and birdied all nine holes before adding four more birdies and two eagles on the front nine.

That was enough for a thumping ten-stroke victory as Bowen Xiao, tied sixth in the main tournament on eight under, finished 22 under with his partner Zetao Ning to share second place with Sebastian Garcia and his partner Leon.

Dan Bradbury and amateur Jonathan Chu were fourth with Yuto Katsuragawa and Liang Huang completing the top five.

Teen sensation Zhou thrills home crowds

Yanhan Zhou was proud after finishing in a sensational tie for third place on home soil.

Zhou, aged just 17 and a seven-time winner on the China Tour last season, finished 15 under par after he followed up three successive 68s with a final round of 69 at Mission Hills.

That left him tied with DP World Tour winners Adrian Otaegui and Marcus Armitage and behind only Gumberg and Campillo.

"I'm very proud," he said. "I never thought I'd come in the top five this week.

"I just wanted to focus on every shot, every hole, and it was a good result.

"I just wanted to do my best, there's a lot of my friends coming here and family coming here, I just want to do my best and just let it go.

"This will give me very much confidence to play well for the next events. I'm very much looking forward to playing the Volvo China Open."

Growing the game in China

The growth of the event - now one of two in China on the DP World Tour schedule - has been tipped to bring long-term benefits for grassroots golf in the country.

The tournament made its second appearance as a co-sanctioned DP World Tour event to kick off this year’s Asian Swing, following last year’s inaugural appearance on the schedule.

Tenniel Chu, vice-chairman of the China Golf Association and Mission Hills Group, said: “This has always been our key ambition at Mission Hills, to grow the grassroots and junior and amateur golf development.

“We are very fortunate to continue to work with the China Golf Association and we have also invited the R&A together to do the GolfSixes.

“Every international golf event we host, we always do a golf clinic with our juniors and invite the top professionals to share their knowledge and skills and inspire the next generation. That’s how we see the baton passing to the next generation.”

How long?

The 681-yard 13th on the Blackstone Course last week was the third longest hole in DP World Tour history and proved a true test for our field.

A relative rarity for a par five, the hole was the hardest of the week on the Fortinet Threat Score, averaging 0.24 strokes above its par.

It returned just one eagle and 19 birdies, with 45 bogeys and 17 double bogeys or worse.
