David was a tour professional during the 1970s but decided to become a club professional for a while during the early 1980s. However he missed life on Tour and on his return he was to taste the sort of success that had eluded him prior to his break. The first sign that things were improving came on the Satellite Tour when he won the 1987 Vernon's tournament in Merseyside but the undoubted highlight of this amicable Welshman's career came later that year when he teamed up with Ian Woosnam to defeat Scotland's Sam Torrance and Sandy Lyle in a play-off for the 1987 World Cup of Golf at Kapalua in Hawaii. David said he learned a great deal while watching Woosnam in action in that event and he was to use that knowledge with conspicuous success the following year when he closed with rounds of 60 and 65 to claim his sole European Tour victory at the 1988 Biarritz Open. That was a spectacular achievement and it would have been even more memorable had David not recorded a bogey on the final hole of his third round after having played the first 17 holes in 55 strokes. David did not record The European Tour's first competitive round of 59 on that occasion but he did go on to taste further success at the 1991 Ivory Coast Open before resuming his career as a club professional. David is currently the National Coach to the Welsh Golfing Union.David's father was a Royal Marines quartermaster sergeant.
