A stalwart of the European Tour for more than two decades. Joined in 1989 and was Rookie of the Year that same season. Represented Europe at The 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island where he was unbeaten thanks to a fourball win with Ian Woosnam and a singles victory over Mark O'Meara.

Won six European Tour titles, including a successful defence of the Portuguese Open in 2006. Became the leading name on the Senior Tour in 2015 as he secured the Rookie of the Year award - becoming the second person to do so on both Tours - and won his debut event, the Scottish Senior Open.

Secured the John Jacobs Trophy in 2016 after his famous three-shot Senior Open Championship victory at Carnoustie, made even sweeter as he was joined by his son Sam on the bag.

Would win the Scottish Senior Open for the second time in 2017, and later that season won his first Senior Tour event outside of Scotland at the Paris Legends Championship. Won his second Senior Major at the 2018 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship en route to winning the John Jacobs Trophy for a second time in his career.

Returned to the winner's circle on the Legends Tour in 2021, winning the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship at Formby, his ninth over-50s title.

Has won a further three times on PGA TOUR Champions.
