Reached World Number One in 2011 and has played a key role in four Ryder Cup appearances, holing the winning putt to seal the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Won four times on the European Tour before his break-out year in 2010 in which he became just the second player from Germany to win a Major after Bernhard Langer at the US PGA Championship. Additional victories at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, KLM Open and Alfred Dunhill Links saw him finish that season as Race to Dubai champion.

Reached the rank of World Number One in 2011 a month after his successful title defence in Abu Dhabi. He also won the WGC-HSBC Champions later that year, becoming the then tenth player to win both a Major and a World Golf Championships event.

Became the fourth European to win the Players Championship in 2014 and went on to win a second Major title later that year at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, where he set a Championship record for 36 holes of 130 strokes, cruising to an eight-stroke victory.

Turned professional in 2005 and won five times in 14 starts in 2006 on the EPD Tour, shooting 59 in one event, before finishing fourth in the 2006 Challenge Tour Rankings after playing just eight events and winning two.

Won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award on his maiden season on the top tier in 2007.
