Enjoyed an illustrious career on The European Tour during which he won 11 titles and represented Europe in six Ryder Cup Matches. Learned the game from his father, a scratch golfer and county player, and went on to have a fine amateur career, winning the 1971 British Boys Championship, competing for England at Boys, Youths and Senior level, and representing Great Britain and Ireland in the 1973 Walker Cup. Turned professional after that match, joining The European Tour in 1974. He won his first two Tour titles, the Portuguese Open and the Madrid Open, in 1978 and he was also to win twice in seasons 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 before recording his last European Tour win at the 1988 English Open at Royal Birkdale. Made his Ryder Cup debut in 1977, going on to be a part of three winning sides, in 1985, 1987 and 1995. On that last occasion, he had a hole-in-one on his way to defeating Peter Jacobsen by one hole in the singles. The Englishman also represented his country in seven Alfred Dunhill Cups and four World Cups, winning individual honours at the 1985 contest at La Quinta, California. For the last few years, he has worked as an on-course commentator for Sky Sports.
