Unorthodox swing and three-knuckle grip. Lover of football, horse racing and all-round jovial character. Came to prominence as an amateur, winning the English title, playing Walker Cup golf and losing to Greg Norman in a play-off for the Australian Masters in 1989. Finally secured his first European Tour win at the BMW International Open - a highly popular victory - after six second place finishes in Europe. Insists his main aim now is to win for a second time. However that ambition took second place to regaining his card after losing his playing privileges in 2001. Finished 130th on the Volvo Order of Merit but went to the Qualifying School and earned 13th card. Now a member of the European Tour Board of Directors.
