Philip, or “Pip” as he is better known, a former Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, turns 50 on April 14 and joins the Seniors Tour in the same season as his much-heralded son, Jamie, a graduate from the Challenge Tour, joins the European Tour. A former British Youths champion, “Pip” made an instantaneous impact as a professional, finishing tied third in the 1973 Sunbeam Electric Scottish Open on his way to winning that year’s Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award. He never won on The European Tour but he did produce numerous fine performances, most notably in 1977 when he finished 38th on the Order of Merit. Left the Tour at the end of the 1982 season to start a career as a club professional. Son, Jamie, a member of the 2001 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup side, is currently one of English golf’s brightest young prospects.
