    One of Britain’s greatest post-war golfers. His victory in the 1969 Open Championship was the first by a Briton since Max Faulkner in 1951, and his US Open triu mph the following year was the first by a Briton since Ted Ray in 1920.

    Europe’s non-playing Ryder Cup captain in 1983, 85, 87 and 89.

    The son of a Scunthorpe lorry driver, he took up golf at the age of nine. Won the Lincolnshire Boys Championship aged 13, and three years later won the Lincolnshire Open by nine shots.

    Turned professional in 1962, becoming assistant to Bill Shankland at Potters Bar.
