Burst onto the scene with his Open victory at Royal St George’s in his first appearance in a Major Championship. He was the first player since Francis Ouimet at the 1913 US Open Championship to win a Major at his first attempt. He was also the first player to win The Open on his first start since Tom Watson at Carnoustie in 1975. Jumped from 396th to 35th in the Official World Golf Ranking, the biggest single leap since the Ranking began in 1986. Took a while to adjust to his Open victory but finished joint eighth at Carnoustie in 2007 after a final round of 65. Further top ten finishes followed in the final two Majors of the 2008 season – he came tied seventh in The 137th Open Championship, and tied second in the US PGA Championship. Those two results propelled him into The Ryder Cup reckoning, and he played his part in America’s 16½-11½ success at Valhalla. Completed the last five holes on Wentworth Club’s famous West Course with an incredible five threes, including back-to-back eagles to jump to joint sixth in the BMW PGA Championship for his best performance of the 2009 season. Grew up only 50 yards from the practice putting green of Mill Creek GC in Ostrander, Ohio, where his grandfather built the course and his father is superintendent. Started playing golf at age three, but didn’t take it seriously until high school.
