Fulfilled the early promise he showed on The European Tour by winning the 2002 Algarve Open de Portugal after a play-off with David Gilford. Attended the US PGA Tour School at the end of that year, qualifying in 21st place. Took up golf seriously aged ten. Father Lars, a low handicap golfer, was an Executive for Volvo Trucks Division, meaning Pettersson lived in England between the ages of ten and 14, before moving to his current home in Raleigh, North Carolina. Won the European Amateur Individual Championship in 2000, and represented Sweden in the Eisenhower Trophy before turning professional later that year.
