The veteran compiled a tremendous record card in 2008 by winning three times on his way to an automatic place on the United States’ winning Ryder Cup Team in his home State of Kentucky. Along the way, he joined Tiger Woods as the only three-time winner of the prestigious Memorial Tournament hosted annually by Jack Nicklaus. Amassed a total of $4,663,794 in 2008 to finish fifth on the US PGA Tour Money List. Continued that form into 2009, winning the FBR Open and Travelers Championship and was only denied becoming a Major Champion at the 2009 Masters by an inspired Angel Cabrera. Took up golf at age seven with encouragement from his father, who spent hours teeing balls up for him. Named winner of the 2002 Charles Bartlett Award, given to a professional golfer for his unselfish contributions to the betterment of society, by the Golf Writers Association of America. Donates five per cent of his winnings to David Lipscomb University, his wife’s alma mater, to fund a pair of scholarships. In addition, 11 years ago, he took out a loan to build Country Creek, a public course in his hometown of Franklin, Kentucky. In 1995 he bought 142 acres of land and borrowed more than $2.5 million to design and build the only public course in the town. He designed it for mid-to-high handicappers and kept it affordable: 18 holes with a cart is $28; $12 without one.
