A dislocated left shoulder and sprained right ankle, sustained from a 1991 dirt bike accident when he flew over the handlebars avoiding a friend who had spun out of control after hitting a pothole, "slammed" the brakes on his career after three 1989 US Tour wins, including a Bob Hope Chrysler Classic play-off success over Sandy Lyle and Paul Azinger, lifted him to eighth in the US Tour money list. Went 17 months without swinging a club then reinjured finger twice, before relaunching career in 1994 with help of three European Tour appearances and playing first full US Tour season in 1995. Damage to left ring finger left him unable to grip club properly so developed reverse overlapping grip to compensate.
