Canter and McGowan set for battle

It's taken three days but at last Laurie Canter has some company at the top of the leaderboard. He led by four after an opening 60, led by two after round two and despite a hat-rick of birdies to finish round three, he now has fellow Englishman Ross McGowan alongside him at 19 under. When Canter made his European Tour debut at the 2010 Open Championship, McGowan was battling to get into the European Ryder Cup team, falling short by just a whisker. Since then, both men have been fighting to keep a regular place on the European Tour, and they enter the final round in Italy three shots clear of the rest of the field. A win for either on Sunday would be career changing.

Shocking luck for Canter

Canter hit what looked to be an excellent tee shot on the fourth but saw his ball hit the power lines and end up in the water. Under the rules you get a mulligan if your ball hits the cables but Canter sent his second attempt into the water as well - this time without the deflection. He did well to keep the damage to a single shot and picked it back up on the next par five en route to a 69.

Partially plugged in the bunker and with water over the back is the stuff of nightmares. Unless you're Canter. Just look at this.

Big change on the bag

With Dave McNeilly taking a week off, Matt Wallace had some big boots to fill on the bag, and he appears to have taken it literally. Wallace is friends with international rugby union player Ben Spencer and the Bath star is on caddying duties this week. Not that Wallace will be returning the favour any time soon. "Ben is definitely doing me a favour," said Wallace. "Dave is having a week off. Ben stepped in, filled the boots, and he's doing a really good job. He knows professional sport. If I had to hold a tackle bag, I'd be running away!" Spencer, meanwhile, is enjoying his foray into new territory. "It's good, nice to get into a different professional environment and see how these guys work and hopefully keep him in check," he said.
