Day three digest: 2021 U.S. Open Championship

Everything you need to know from Moving Day in California.

Torrey Pines

Louis left it late, Rory was on the move, the champ was lurking and there were some slippery customers about on day three of the 2021 U.S Open Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Saturday at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Louis leaps into lead

Louis Oosthuizen was two over for his day and three off the lead as he stood on the 16th tee. Some 45 minutes and almost 85 feet of holed putts later he had gone birdie-par-eagle to sign for a 70 and join the lead at five under. Since winning The Open Championship in 2010, the South African has finished second five times in Majors, including at this event in 2015 and last time out at the US PGA Championship. Is this his time to become a multiple Major champ? "It would mean everything in the world," he said. "It's what we play the game for and why we stand on the range hitting balls, to win Majors. I feel I have the game to win another one so I need to go out and play well tomorrow."

Rory looking to end the wait

Rory McIlroy may be a four time Major winner but the last of those came in 2014 and he revealed after a third round 67 that he did not feel he had contended as often as he would have liked in recent years. Well, he enters round four just two shots back and having won the Wells Fargo Championship on the US PGA Tour on Mother's Day in the United States recently, he is eager to add a Father's Day win to his CV. "Mother's Day was pretty good to us a few weeks ago, so hopefully we can have the same result on Father's Day," he said. "I'm just excited for the opportunity to have a chance and be in one of the final groups."

He put on a show, too........

Most people would say the highlight of Rory's round was this stunner of a holed pitch on the 12th.

But which shot did caddie Harry Diamond think was the "best shot I've hit all year" according to McIlroy? This incredible approach into the 13th.

Here comes the champ

Bryson DeChambeau doesn't really do under the radar. Be it his methods, his distance or his relationships with fellow pros and fans, the defending champion is rarely anything but box office. But after quietly carding three birdies and 15 pars on day three, he heads into Sunday just two off the lead. "I feel like I'm starting to understand Major Championship golf and how to play it and how to go about managing my game, my attitude and just my patience level," he said. "If I can continue to do that tomorrow, I think I'll have a good chance."

Meeting the locals

Don't go too far into the rough in southern California or you might just meet this guy.

That may be why Rory sent Harry over the fence at the 15th.........

Rory McIlroy

"No, no, not at all," was McIlroy's response when asked if he considered trying to hit from down in the canyon.

One for the highlight reel

He may have almost fallen over but Justin Thomas still managed to play a great shot and put on a show for the crowds. Never change, JT.
