Day two digest: 2022 MyGolfLife Open hosted by Pecanwood

Everything you need to know from day two in South Africa.

Pecanwood Golf and Country Club

Hennie was chasing history, Hendy was handing out putters, the Spaniards were in dreamland and the field were showing their support for the people of Ukraine on day two of the 2022 MyGolfLife Open hosted by Pecanwood.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday in Hartbeespoort.

Du Plessis leads the way

The low scoring continued on Friday as Hennie du Plessis added a 65 to his opening 62 to get 17 under and lead the way by one shot. Countryman Tristen Strydom and Spanish duo Nacho Elvira and Pablo Larrazábal were his nearest challengers, with 25 players in double figures and the cut falling at a record-equalling six under. Not that Du Plessis was finding life easy on his home course. "It was hard work," he said. "I had to stay very patient out there, it definitely was a little bit trickier on the greens this afternoon than yesterday but I kept trusting my lines and it paid off. It's been good, if you stay patient and keep hitting good shots it will happen. I'm just staying patient, I'll keep focusing on my targets and enjoy it."

Larrazábal goes beyond dreams

Larrazábal revealed he had achieved "something I never dreamed of" as he reached 16 under after just two days of play. With a gettable layout and perfect conditions at Pecanwood, the five-time DP World Tour winner followed up his opening 63 with a 65 to reach a score that he bettered only once over 72 holes in those five victories. He had fellow Spaniard Elvira for company at 16 under and knew he would have to maintain a similar pace to his first 36 holes if he was to claim win number six. "16 under par after two rounds is something I never dreamed of, so it’s quite amazing," he said. "The plan will be to tee it up tomorrow on the first knowing that we have to go out aggressive and make a lot of birdies."

So close to history

When Du Plessis eagled the seventh he was 18 under and two pars would have seen him match the 36-hole record low score to par on the DP World Tour - he bogeyed the ninth.

If Alfredo Garcia-Heredia had birdied the ninth he would have been the 65th player at seven under and we would have had a new record for lowest cut to par - he also bogeyed the ninth.

So near and yet so far.

Alfredo Garcia-Heredia

That could come in Hendy

Scott Hend decided his putter was not for him so what did he do? Snap it? Throw it in a lake? Nope, the big-hitting Aussie gave it to a fan. That's why we love you, Scott. Never change.

Supporting the people of Ukraine

The golfing world and UNICEF have joined forces to provide help to the people of Ukraine via the #golfersforukraine initiative, with many players wearing ribbons on their hats in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. We caught up with some of the players at Pecanwood to talk about it.
