Day two digest: Austrian Golf Open

Everything you need to know from day two at Diamond Country Club.

Martin Kaymer

Cañizares kept fighting, Kaymer kept lurking, Detry kept pin seeking and Walters kept searching in round two of the 2021 Austrian Golf Open.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday in Atzenbrugg.

Cañizares fights back to keep lead

He may have entered the day with a one shot lead but within two holes he found himself two behind after a bogey-double start. Luckily, Alejandro Cañizares is made of stern stuff and he fought back brilliantly to sign for a 70 and keep his one shot advantage at seven under. "Overall it was a great round," he said. "The most important thing was to stay calm and focused and accept the fact that you’re going to be freezing cold and move the best you can with every shot."

Kaymer looking to clean up

With the career that Martin Kaymer has had, there's no doubt he knows exactly what to do to find another gear - and that is ominous when he's only one back. The two time Major Champion carded a 70 to get to six under and he is looking for improvements over the weekend. "Today I missed a few opportunities and a couple of silly mistakes unfortunately happened, so I can build on my solid play and hopefully I can avoid a couple of mistakes over the weekend," he said. "I struggled on the par threes a little bit, especially with the tee shots on six and 14. Those two par threes really play with my mind a little bit, I don’t know what it is, so I need to figure it out over the weekend." If he does - look out.

Walters waltzes into contention

There would be few more popular winners this week that Justin Walters. The South African has kept his card at the last possible opportunity twice in the last seven years - both times during tough periods personally following the death of a parent. He then looked like claiming that elusive first victory at the ISPS HANDA UK Championship last year but lost in a play-off to Rasmus Højgaard after leading wire to wire. A second round 68 moved him to five under after 36 holes in Austria and there will be plenty rooting for him over the weekend. "I was very inconsistent last year and took a good look at myself," he said. "Me and my team drew up a plan and it’s starting to take a bit of form now and show some results."

Detry dialled in

Thomas Detry is seriously loving his irons this week. After making the 13th ace of the season on day one at the sixth, he almost holed out for eagle on the seventh on Friday. When you're hot, you're hot.

Renato races to the finish

Renato Paratore was heading home after he bogeyed the 14th to slip to four over for the week. A birdie-eagle-par-birdie finish later and he had the lowest round of the week with a 66. At level par, the Italian is still in this.

Has a train gone past? Is someone playing terrible music? Or is a ball heading for their head? Only Kaymer and Thomas Detry can be sure but we love this pic.
