DID YOU KNOW – THE CELTIC MANOR WALES OPEN En route to winning his first European Tour International Schedule victory at the 2004 event, Simon Khan recorded a nine hole score of 27 (-9) in his second round, before signing for a course record 61 (-11) on the Wentwood Hills course. He became just the fourth player in European Tour history to shoot 27. He follows, José Maria Cañizares (1978 Swiss Open), Robert Lee (1985 Johnnie Walker Monte Carlo Open and 1987 Portuguese Open) and Joakim Haeggman (1997 Alfred Dunhill Cup). The 2001 championship represented only the sixth time a European Tour event has been cut to 36 holes. None of the previous five events which had been reduced, were decided via a play-off. In 2001Paul McGinley defeated Daren Lee and Paul Lawrie in extra holes to create European Tour history, with the first 36 hole tournament ending in a play-off. In the six years of the championship, five different nations have won. They are: Denmark (Steen Tinning – 2000); Ireland (McGinley – 2001); Scotland (Paul Lawrie – 2002); England (Ian Poulter – 2003 and Simon Khan – 2004) and Spain (Miguel Angel Jiménez – 2005). Ian Woosnam will be aiming to win his third different European Tour International Schedule victory in Wales. His first victory was the 1983 British Masters and seven years later, the 1990 Epson Grand Prix of Europe. Both events were staged at St Pierre. The Ryder Cup Captain’s best performance in The Celtic Manor Wales Open is tied third in 2000.
