Howell Favourite as Victor Chandler British Masters enters the final furlong

David Howell takes a one shot lead into the final round of the Victor Chandler British Masters and is odds-on at 10/11 to collect the title although Robert Karlsson from Sweden, his closest pursuer on 202, one behind, will have plenty to say about that and is 5/4 second favourite and favoured by many of the backers, writes Angus Loughran.

Lee Westwood who shot a fine 67 on Saturday is the only other serious contender for the title according to the sponsors prices as he is 10/1 and it is 20/1 bar.

Howell began the week as a 100/1 outsider although was tipped by one or two shrewdies and was available at 40/1 before round two. Karlsson was heavily supported on Friday from 11/1 down to 15/8 and has held his position as one of the top two in the betting ever since.

Sunday’’s two balls see Mathias Gronberg and Lee Westwood paired together again and of course Karlsson and Howell are set to continue their duel around The Marquess Course.

A value in the two-ball prices could be at 11.04am where Sweden’’s Patrik Sjoland can be backed at 11/10 to beat Mark McNulty. Sjoland shot a three under par 69 on Saturday while McNulty struggled for a 76, seven shots worse than his Sunday playing partner and yet the Swede is odds against.

Justin Rose looks fair value at 4/6 to beat Sandy Lyle who has made his first cut anywhere in the world this year at 10.23am while Brian Davis should also be backed at 10/11 to beat Sam Torrance. The treble of Sjoland, Rose and Davis returns 6/1 which looks fair value.

On course punters are able to take advantage of in-running betting during the final round where there could be some each way value against the front two but most punters now see this event as a straight match between Howell and Karlsson although watch out for Westwood who looks the value at 10/1.
