A new course record was set while the defending champion started well on day one of the 2022 Mallorca Golf Open.

Armitage sets course record

Englishman Marcus Armitage is the man to catch at the top of the leaderboard after a fine first-round performance. He fired eight birdies and no bogeys to sign for a course-record 63. Armitage finished with a flourish, notching back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth to lead by one on eight under par.

Højgaard twins flying high

Golf fans have become used to seeing the surname Højgaard high up on leaderboards in recent years, with twin brothers Rasmus and Nicolai each winning multiple DP World Tour titles. They both feature in the top 20 after Thursday's opening round, with Rasmus in joint-third on six under par and Nicolai three further back after his 68.

Syme shines at start of the back nine

Connor Syme got off to a steady start on Thursday, carding three birdies and a single bogey on the front nine. But his round sprung into life after the turn as he rolled in his 12-foot eagle putt on the 11th before birdieing the 12th from 18 feet. He signed for an opening 67 to sit in a share of ninth place.
