Open de España presented by Madrid: Fantasy DP World Tour Powered by Axi ones to watch

The DP World is back where it all began this week as we head to Club de Campo Villa de Madrid for the Open de España presented by Madrid.

Spain's national open was the first ever DP World Tour event in 1972 and has been on the schedule in all but two seasons since.

This year, it is the 16th and final national open on the calendar and a stellar field is looking to add their name to a roll of honour including Arnold Palmer, Bernhard Langer, Sir Nick Faldo and three-time winners Seve Ballesteros and Jon Rahm.

Race to Dubai Rankings Delivered by DP World leader Patrick Reed will be looking to extend his advantage before closest challenger Rory McIlroy tees it up in three of the next four events as the season reaches what promises to be a dramatic crescendo.

Francesco Molinari, Shane Lowry, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Danny Willett complete the Major-winners club, while there is also plenty more interest for the local fans.

Eugenio Chacarra, who is still very much in the hunt for season-long honours, is in action along with former winners Ángel Hidalgo and Rafa Cabrera Bello and fellow Spanish stars Nacho and Manuel Elvira, Alejandro del Rey, Pablo Larrazábal, David Puig, Ángel Ayora, Jorge Campillo among a host of others.

Add in defending champion Marco Penge and we are in for a thrilling week.

What is the Axi Edge Score?

The Axi Edge Score made a spectacular debut earlier this month as it tipped Jeff Winther, with the Dane going on to win his second DP World Tour title at the Danish Golf Championship on home soil.

The Axi Edge Score is a rating from 0-100 combining form, consistency and upside into a single score making it easier to compare players and gain the edge on your rivals.

The score is built entirely from data the Fantasy game already produces, via a composite golfer rating as follows:

Skill (50%)

What it measures: How well is this golfer scoring right now?

• Average fantasy points per tournament over the golfer's last five completed events

Consistency (30%)

What it measures: How reliable is this golfer?

• % of last five tournaments where the golfer finished above the field median Fantasy score

Risk (20%)

What it measures: How volatile is this player from week-to-week?

• Best single-tournament Fantasy score in the last five events

Who has the Edge?

Shane Lowry

After three runner-up finishes worldwide across the last two seasons, Lowry returned to the solo winner's circle for the first time in four years at last month's Amgen Irish Open. And he did not just please the home fans, he put on a show, romping to an 11-shot triumph to win his national open for a second time. After a decade away, he is now playing this event for the third year in a row having recorded a top 15 in 2024 and narrowly missed the cut last season. He sandwiched his home win with top 30s at The Open and BMW PGA Championship so full of confidence and impressing on the big stage, Lowry might take some beating.

Favourite: Ludvig Åberg

The Swede makes his debut at the event this week but that has not stopped the bookmakers installing him as Favourite. That probably comes down to his remarkable consistency not just in making cuts but being around top tens and top fives in truly elite fields. Since his top ten at The Open, he has recorded two more in FedEx Cup Playoff events - including fourth at the Tour Championship - while registering top 30s at Wentworth and at the FedEx Open de France. It seems hard to believe he has just one DP World Tour win and only one worldwide in the past two seasons but he could well be poised to put that right.

Form Horse: Jacob Skov Olesen

Could this be the week? The hugely talented and impressive Dane has made himself - perhaps alongside Ayora - the next cab off the rank in terms of expectation for a DP World Tour breakthrough. He has missed just five cuts all season, with as many top tens to go with two second-place finishes and a third. In his last eight starts, barring a missed cut on his debut at the BMW PGA Championship, he has not finished outside the top 30, with two of those events being on the PGA Tour, two on the Back 9 and one with the pressure of a home crowd. He is currently on track to earn dual membership and a win this week would be another step on the road to becoming a global star.
