Represented Scotland at all levels as an amateur. Turned professional in 1988 and became assistant at Burhill GC in Surrey.

Became the second oldest player to secure a European Tour card at the Qualifying School Final Stage when, at 45 years and 202 days, he finished 28th – the last qualifying spot – at PGA Catalunya Resort in November 2012. That came 20 years after he first achieved the feat.

Followed up his 1992 success by winning the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award in 1993. Came close to capturing his third European Tour title at the 2009 European Open, only to be denied by one shot by Frenchman Christian Cévaër. Limited to 11 appearances in 2010 – making the cut in five of those – because of the recurrence of a back injury which blighted him three years earlier, and was given a season-long medical exemption for 2011.

Made his Staysure Tour debut at the inaugural European Tour Properties Senior Classic in 2017.
