Day three digest: 2022 WGC - Dell Technologies Match Play

Everything you need to know from the final round of group matches in Texas.

Adam Scott

The sweet 16 was decided, Richard was making headlines - again, Xander couldn't catch a break and Bryson and Collin were channelling each other on day three of the 2022 WGC - Dell Technologies Match Play.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Austin Country Club.

Seeds show their class

Of the 16 players through to the last-16, eight of them are top seeds. Three of the world's top five have made the weekend and we have some truly mouth-watering ties. In one half of the draw, Collin Morikawa takes on Abraham Ancer while in the other, Jon Rahm faces Brooks Koepka in what could be the match of the week. Koepka, Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson and Kevin Kisner have all won all three of their matches. It should be some weekend.

Blandy making waves

We've always loved Richard Bland, even before his victory at last season's Betfred British Masters which made him a DP World Tour winner at the 478th attempt. But going undefeated in the group stages against Bryson DeChambeau, Lee Westwood and Talor Gooch and advancing to the last-16 has put the eyes of the entire golfing world upon him. The 49-year-old is not only playing for the trophy this week but a place in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking and a debut at the Masters Tournament. With the first hurdle cleared, he now has to beat Johnson - and then Rahm or Koepka. "Of course he's favourite," said Bland of Johnson. "That's not being negative or anything like that, that's just realistic. Everybody knows that. But if I play how I know I can play, I would like to think he's got a game on his hands. So yeah, we'll see. But I've got nothing to lose. I'm clearly the underdog, so the underdog's never got anything to lose." And everything to gain.

How to make a golf ball disappear

There's bad luck and then there's bad luck. We feel for you Xander Schauffele.

No putter required

It wasn't the best day for Matt Fitzpatrick as he lost his match and then a play-off for the knockout stages but he'll remember this shot for a while.

Bryson hitting it a long way

And it's not even the driver. Just the 61-foot putt for DeChambeau.

Collin hitting it a long way

You've just three-putted the 17th to drop back to All Square in a match you were 4 Up in at the turn - what's your response? If you're Morikawa, you smash driver 365 yards to leave yourself 32 feet for eagle on the last.
